Culver City, CA, May 13, 2005: For immediate release: Surfx Technologies was awarded today a Phase II SBIR contract from the U.S. Air Force for the "Environmentally Friendly On-Aircraft Repair of Polyetheretherketone Thermoplastic Components" — According to Robert Hicks, CEO, "We are excited to have the Air Force support development of a portable atmospheric plasma tool for the surface treatment of composite materials." The Atomflo™ has been shown to be an effective tool for activating PEEK for bonding. After a short plasma treatment, the lap-shear strength of bonded composites exceeds the manufacturerÕs specifications for the adhesive (3M AF563), and failure is 100% cohesive, indicating that outstanding adhesion was achieved.  The Phase II award will enable the development of a more powerful and versatile plasma tool for repairing composites on USAF fighter aircraft. Surfx Technologies has partnered with the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials on this research and development effort. They will carry out comprehensive mechanical testing on the bonded composites to determine their strength and durability under extreme conditions encountered during aircraft service.  The Delaware Center for Composite Materials will also serve as a Beta test site for validating this technology in other areas of composites manufacturing.  Professor Jack Gillespie, the Center Director, said, "We are very excited about Surfx's technology for plasma treating surfaces for adhesive bonding and repair of composites.  The equipment is portable, the treatment process is rapid and safe and the performance is outstanding."
